The Swaddle Debacle – Me, Myself and Kids

The Swaddle Debacle

Uncategorized

I recently read an article about how the American Academy of Pediatrics believes that swaddling our babies is unsafe and that it should be banned.  I don’t know about the rest of you moms out there, but swaddling my kids was top priority.

My first-born was swaddled until he was 5 months old and only stopped because he kept getting out of it and it never seemed to bother him.  My second on the other hand, is now 5.5 months old and the instant he is out of the swaddle, he wakes himself up.  He will then lie in bed staring at his hands in awe like he’s tripping, and start talking to himself.  He can’t get himself back to sleep and of course that means mommy is up.  Who needs that at all hours of the night?

I have tried putting him to bed unswaddled, but it hasn’t worked.  The other night he spent 20 minutes talking to his hands.  The second after I went in to wrap him up, he fell asleep.  He is just that much more comfortable rolled up like a piece of maki.

I don’t know about you, but I know my baby is happier and sleeps better when he is swaddled.  So, as a mom, I’m going to do what I think is best for my children.  And if that means keeping them swaddled until they are older, then so be it.  When he’s ready to sleep with his body free, then I’ll stop.

Last night T slept with one arm out of his swaddle the entire night and didn’t wake up.  See, he’s outgrowing it already!

What do you think of the swaddle?

For the last 7+ years I have immersed myself in the "mom life". My blog, appropriately named Me, Myself and Kids is my life; the challenges, the laughter, and the tears. But I also offer my own version of motherly advice. In doing so, I’ve designating myself as an MD or “Mom Doc”. Not because I know it all. Don’t get me wrong. It’s an open perspective; my learnings shared so you can take the good, bad and ugly and adapt it to your own family life. So please join me as I share all of the crazy and overwhelming thoughts and experiences of the mom life with Me, Myself and Kids.
